LAUREN MILLS is the recipient of the 1996 Golden Kite Award for Illustration, together with her
husband, Dennis Nolan, for their book Fairy Wings.
She also explored the world of faeries in her illustrations for
Elfabet by Jane Yolen
and a book she both wrote and illustrated, Tatterhood and the Hobgoblins, winner of
the New England Book Design Award.
Ms. Mills is also the author-illustrator of The Rag Coat, praised
by
School Library Journal in a starred review for its "lovely paintings, lyrical writing,
(and) heartwarming message." The book garnered numerous honors, including New York
state's Charlotte Award and was performed as a ballet at the University of
Utah.
Ms. Mills received a B.A. in Drawing and Painting at the University of California, Santa Barbara,
and a M.A. in Book Illustration at San Jose State University.
Her artwork has been exhibited at Radcliffe College, the National Museum of Women in the Arts,
and galleries and museums throughout the country.
She lives in a converted barn in Massachusetts with her husband, daughter, and a host of visiting
animals, including toads, bats, mice, a bear, chickadees, and chipmunks, some of which appear in
this book.
