Susan Hill was born in Scarborough, Yorkshire, in 1942. She was educated at grammar schools there and in Coventry, and studied at King's College, London. Her works of fiction include Gentleman and Ladies, A Change for the Better, I'm the King of the Castle (Somerset Maugham Award), The Albatross and Other Stories (John Llewellyn Rhys Memorial Prize), Strange Meeting, The Bird of Night (Whitbread Award), A Bit of Singing and Dancing, In the Springtime of the Year, The Woman in Black, Lanterns Across the Snow, Air and Angels, Mrs de Winter, a sequel to Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca, Listening to the Orchestra and The Service of Clouds. Her non-fiction books include the illustrated Shakespeare Country, The Spirit of the Cotswolds, Through the Garden Gate and Through the Kitchen Window. She has also written books for children, including One Night at a Time, Mother's Magic, Can It Be True? (Smarties Prize) and Suzy's Shoes, and two autobiographical books, The Magic Apple Tree and Family. In addition, she has edited Thomas Hardy's The Distracted Preacher and Other Tales for Penguin Classics, The Penguin Book of Modern Women's Short Stories, The Penguin Book of Contemporary Women's Short Stories and The Second Penguin Book of Modern Women's Short Stories. She is a regular broadcaster and book reviewer.
Susan Hill is married to the Shakespeare scholar Stanley Wells. They have two daughters and live in Gloucestershire.
