"As mothers and former music teachers, we believe music encourages freedom of expression and creativity in children, as well as self-confidence and language development. Most importantly, music can be an uplifting and joyful experience that brings people together."
—Wee Sing creators Pamela Conn Beall and Susan Hagen Nipp
Wee Sing was born in 1977, when Pam Beall and Susan Nipp, young mothers and former music teachers in Portland Oregon, realized that while many people remember the first words of classic children's songs, most could not remember every word and note. In order to keep this music alive, the creators hand wrote a song book containing many old favorites. The authors invested $200 and distributed the books throughout the Pacific Northwest. Their immediate success helped pioneer a resurgence in traditional children's music and prompted expansion to audiocassettes. In 1985, Wee
Sing released its first children's musical video.
The success of Wee Sing stems from the authors' integration of their personal experiences as mothers with their professional music teaching
background. Wee Sing continues to play a major role in their own families as they share in the joy of music. Their children have contributed to the Wee Sing library by singing and researching. "We think
children should have the freedom to be innocent as long as they can. We want
children to see the beauty and wonder around them, and music is such an
integral part of that," says Susan Nipp. "Everything that comes from Wee Sing comes from our hearts and personal experiences," adds Pam Beall.
