With an acute sense of what we fear most coupled with an inner hardiness that brings us superhero-like heroines that make it all okay, author Danielle Girard is a role model for all in need of strength and moxie.
Her two novels to date, “Ruthless Game” and “Savage Art” follow the travails of strong female protagonists who fight for their lives while each unraveling mysteries close to home. Each of Girard’s characters experiences a personal arc that brings her to the realization that it is okay to need other people and be afraid.
An expectant mother with a two year-old daughter, Girard lives a surprisingly low-key traditional life as compared to her brash, non-traditional heroines. Born and raised in Northern California, the Ivy-League educated Girard is from a tight-knit family. But it’s what lurks beyond the surface that is the most fascinating quality of this raconteur. Girard has an imagination that interprets the “what ifs” of life in chilling detail.
Raised on stories from her physician father, Girard dreamed of entering the world of medicine. After a few twists and turns, she instead found herself after college in the world of finance. A writer with an interest in medicine and a head for finance may seem like a disconnect. But actually, says Girard, “writing is mathematical and scientific in nature…plotting a chapter is like working out a large equation.”
Girard writes like some watch television – it is her outlet. Consumed with the responsibilities of motherhood and a full-time job at a financial institution, Girard relegates most of her writing to the evening. Strong support by colleagues in her day job and having strong interpersonal relationships has also contributed to Girard’s success.
As a mother, wife, sister, daughter, co-worker and friend, Danielle is, on the outside, just like the many readers who enjoy her tales. But it is what we don’t see that makes Girard so extraordinary – the inner superhero, KungFu master and FBI agent who she shares a glimpse of with the world.
