Mà-ka-tai-WHAT?

New to Penguin Classics, for the 175th anniversary of the Black Hawk War, is Life of Black Hawk, or Mà-ka-tai-me-she-kià-kiàk, edited by Gerald Kennedy.

More than any other nineteenth-century Native American text, the story of Black Hawk, the leader of the Sauk Indians, provides a vivid, firsthand account of how his people lived, what they believed, and how they responded to the U.S. government's efforts to take away their ancestral land. Never before had a Native American addressed the reading public as the survivor of a war of extermination waged by American forces.
