A reading group is a great way to explore books in finer detail. You'll find that getting together with a group to discuss selections once or twice a month adds to the pleasure of reading, and enhances your understanding of the work. To join a group or start one of your own, you can post a note or ask for recommendations at your local bookstore or library. Many groups also begin as informal gatherings of friends who read a book and meet to discuss it.

Here are some tips to help you get your reading group started.

  1. Choose books by genres or themes, being sure to select books that reflect your group's interests. Have members submit lists of potential authors and books.
  2. Find a comfortable place to gather every four weeks or so, such as a member's home. Some groups alternate homes or locations for every meeting. Otherwise, check local libraries, bookstores, or houses of worship for meeting space.
  3. Choose a discussion leader to keep the group focused. (Again, some groups alternate leaders.)
  4. Print out and distribute the reader's guide questions before beginning to read the work.

To select books by theme, we recommend 500 Great Books by Women: A Reader's Guide by Erica Bauermeister, Jesse Larsen, and Holly Smith. Organized by such themes as Art, Choices, Families, Growing Old, Growing Up, Places and Homes, Power, and Work, this reference book presents classic and contemporary works. Intended for the general reader and including books from all publishers, it features descriptions of more than 500 books—fiction, nonfiction, biographies, and more.
