Breast cancer is the result of cells in the breast becoming malignant and developing into a tumor. Although the disease occurs mostly in women, men can get breast cancer, but the occurrence is rare. We do not know yet what causes breast cancer. Researchers are working hard to discover why and how certain changes in DNA can cause normal breast cells to become cancerous, and to unlock the secret to understanding the genetic basis of breast cancer.
What are my risk factors for breast cancer?
We believe in the mission of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation — to achieve prevention and a cure for breast cancer in our lifetime by providing critical funding for innovative clinical and translational research at leading medical centers worldwide and increasing public awareness of good breast health. Currently, 91 cents of every dollar spent by BCRF is directed towards breast cancer research and awareness programs.
