Dear Reader Letter and Excerpt from Nalini Singh's Archangel's Blade

Dear Reader,

Dmitri, dark, beautiful and deadly, is certainly not traditional hero material. I received more than a few surprised reactions when I announced I was writing his story. But the thing is, I had a secret—I knew Dmitri's history from the instant he appeared on the page, knew the forces that had shaped him, and so I saw him through a different lens.

Those forces were both of violence and of love, and they play a major role in Archangel's Blade, because to know Dmitri, to truly understand him, you must know his past. That past was painful to write at times, and it would've been easy to back off, and try to minimize things. However that would've done a huge disservice to Dmitri—after all, he's not a soft or easy character. He's a demanding male with brutal edges, one unafraid of the darkness within himself.

As a writer, I had to be unafraid of telling his story, no matter how painful.

A man like Dmitri, jaded and lethal, would eat most women alive—but Honor isn't most women. Not only is she a hunter who has survived hell itself, she hasn't let it turn her hard or cruel. In this, she is in many ways, Dmitri's direct opposite. He doesn't understand how she can still feel compassion after what she's lived through, but that very capacity is part of what draws him to her.

Theirs isn't a simple relationship in any sense of the word—how could it be, when Dmitri has had near to a thousand years to lose his humanity, and Honor is clawing back her own after an experience that would've shattered most people? No, it's a relationship that is raw, that is honest, and that is at times, heartbreaking.

While this is very much Dmitri and Honor's story, the other characters we've come to know in the series are an integral part of their lives. So we see Elena and Raphael, catch up with Illium, and cross words with Venom. Since Honor is a hunter, we also see others from the Guild, including Ransom and Ashwini. The Guild Hunter world itself is not static, and it too, deepens and develops further in this book.

However, it all comes back to Dmitri and Honor. I can't predict whether you'll see Dmitri as a hero after reading this book, but you will get to see beyond the dark blade of his personality and to the dangerous, fascinating man within. As for Honor, she might start the book broken, but she's more than a match for Dmitri. I hope you fall in love with her, and with their story.

As always, please feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions.

Warm regards,

Nalini
