My Dear Readers,
I wish I could tell you that I’ve known from the beginning how the Hunter Kiss series would unfold, but the truth is that I’ve been as much in the dark with one or two exceptions as any of you. My journey from the first sentence to the last of each book in the series has taken me along unexpected paths within the heroine Maxine’s life, and while writing The Mortal Bone I found myself in unfamiliar territory that surprised even me.
There I was, writing one kind of book and then an idea filled my head, a small but important idea, and in a splitsecond the entire story became something quite different.
The Mortal Bone casts a new light upon the relationship between Maxine and the Boys (her demonic companions) when the bonds that keep them together are severed. No longer living as tattoos on her body, no longer bound by the sun or her blood, Zee and the others can now roam the world as they desire. Nor are they compelled to protect Maxine, who finds herself shockingly adrift without the constant companionship of her little demons.
This stunning, bewildering separation forces them all to reexamine what they mean to each other. Are the bonds of love stronger than those former bonds of magic? And how will the Boys respond to their first taste of freedom in ten thousand years? Have they evolved, or are they the same bloodthirsty creatures who, once upon a time, destroyed countless worlds? Will Earth become their next feeding ground?
One thing is for certain: Maxine’s life will never be the same after this book.
